There are currently thirteen regencies or districts (Kabupaten) and more than 91 subdistricts (Kecamatan) in Aceh that include a part of the Leuser Ecosystem within their administrative boundaries. With the exception of some settlements in the upper Alas valley and isolated villages at Lokop, Pinding and Pucuk Lembang there are very few people living in the Leuser Ecosystem. Even the settlements mentioned above were established relatively recently. The densest populations live on the eastern plains outside the Leuser Ecosystem with the highest densities being reached in and around Medan in North Sumatra. Moderate population densities are found along the west coast and in and south of the rift valley that extends as far north as Kutacane/Ketambe.
