The management of the Leuser Ecosystem is carried out by the Badan Pengelola Kawasan Ekosistem Leuser (BPKEL).

This body was established through a Governor's decree after first receiving the support of the DPR Aceh. The duties and powers of the BPKEL are clearly spelled out in this document and for the most part are concerned with management. Both Pergub No 52 and UU No 11 imply that the central government agencies and non-government agencies that previously had management responsibilities in the Leuser Ecosystem (Wilayah Aceh) no longer retain those mandates.
